Satisfaction statements and the study of angling in the United Kingdom

Abstract: Using a slightly modified version of a list of satisfaction statements developed by Hawes (1978), and a piloted interview guide, a study was undertaken of a quota sample (N = 304) of coarse, sea, and game anglers in the United Kingdom (U.K.). Results indicated that there is a common range of satisfactions sought from the three types of angling. These included active factors such as adventure and excitement, uncertainty and chance to develop a skill, and a group of factors concerned with mental relaxation, such… Show more

“…These high scores show that anglers in Norway also fish to satisfy a complex set of experience preferences. This finding agrees with studies about angling and other outdoor recreation activities in other countries (Haworth 1983, Knopf 1987, Aas 1991, Driver and others 1991 and supports the validity of the multipie-satisfaction concept for recreational fishing in Scandinavia. Fedler and Ditton (1986) report motivational patterns for their North American anglers that resemble those of the Scandinavian anglers in this study.…”

“…Like other recreational activities, sport fishing or angling can be seen as a collection of related activities people carry out to realize complex needs and desires for experiences and benefits. The multiple motivations and satisfactions associated with angling are well documented from North America (Driver andothers 1991, Holland andDitton 1992) and some other countries (Haworth 1983), but have not, to our knowledge, been reported in studies from any of the Scandinavian countries. A parallel approach in research and management of angling centers on the issue regarding the role of catching fish (Driver 1985, Matlock and others 1988, Ditton and Fedler 1989.…”

“…In particular, the relationship between motivations and satisfactions has not been addressed, and confusion between "motivations" and "satisfactions" exists in the literature. Previous studies have assessed "satisfactions sought" (Haworth 1983), "satisfying experiences desired" (Driver and Knopf 1976), and "preferred outcomes" (Driver and Cooksey 1980). The confusion between satisfactions sought, or motivations, and satisfactions experienced demonstrates the need for a quantitative assessment of how expressed motivations translate into satisfactions experienced.…”

“…Various studies (Hawes, 1978;Haworth, 1983) have adopted this approach, and various relationships have been found. Perhaps the most comprehensive contribution to this approach has been that of Beard and Ragheb (1980; see also Ragheb and Beard, 1980).…”
