“…Such expressions of pity, as well as the 'white saviour industrial complex' (Cole, 2012) that (in the South African craft industry) is targeted particularly at poor black women (Daya, 2014), are increasingly subject to critique in both academic and popular writing (Zakaira, 2014;Varul, 2008). As Adams andRaisborough (2011, p. 8.14, citing Wright, 2004) argue, the ethical consumer 'is encouraged to construct its role as benevolent saviour, reprising ''an imperialist legacy whereby the (active) minority world is constructed as coming to the rescue of the (passive) majority world"'.…”

“…Overall social entrepreneurship research in Africa remains dominated by Western-derived definitions and ideologies about it. The main discourse of social entrepreneurship is the empowerment of the poor (Daya, 2014) and the missions, businesses and results of its activities stem from interaction which social entrepreneurs maintain with members of that society (Karanda and Toledano, 2012). Therefore, consideration of contextual influences is fundamental as African social entrepreneurship may lay ground for hybrid enterprises displaying both characteristics of Western social enterprises as well as African value systems.…”

“…The mainstream research on social enterprises has been preoccupied with the operational issues of the SEs (Daya, 2014;Fitzhugh & Stevenson, 2015;Kay & Donaldson, 2016). The most prevalent themes in current research of social enterprises, for example, have been related to the internal operations of social enterprises where the objective is to identify the factors that enable or hinder the success of SEs or to develop the for-profit funding models for the enterprises.…”

“…The most prevalent themes in current research of social enterprises, for example, have been related to the internal operations of social enterprises where the objective is to identify the factors that enable or hinder the success of SEs or to develop the for-profit funding models for the enterprises. It is argued that the prevalence of these themes in the field has somewhat deterred a critical engagement with the social enterprises (Daya, 2014;Munoz 2010;Sud, VanSand & Baugous 2009;Cho, 2006;Arthur et al, 2006). A detailed literature review on the topic shows that the social analysis in the SEs is relatively absent and the field lacks an overall engagement with the critical issues that are at the core of the development literature.…”
