Scalable Manufacturing of AgCu40(wt %)–WC Nanocomposite Microwires

Abstract: Nanoparticle reinforced metals recently emerge as a new class of materials to empower the functionality of metallic materials. There is a remarkable success in self-incorporation of nanoparticles to bulk metals for extraordinary properties. There is also a strong demand to use nanoparticles to enhance the performance of metallic microwires for exciting opportunities in numerous applications. Here, we show for the first time that silver–copper alloy (AgCu) reinforced by tungsten carbide (WC) (AgCu40 (wt %)–WC) … Show more

“…Salt assisted stir casting was performed to mass produce Zn-WC nanocomposite, which has recently been demonstrated to be an efficient method for other composite systems [ 17 , 18 ]. An induction finance was used to melt potassium aluminum fluoride (KAlF 4 ) at 700°C in a 3kg-capacity graphite crucible (89mm in height and 130mm in inner diameter).…”

“…In the presence of Ti, the dendrite concordance point occurs at a higher solid fraction [ 28 , 29 ]. In general, in the lit-erature, it is mentioned that overheating increases the size of the grains [ 30 , 31 , 32 , 33 ]. In some cases, however, overheating reduces the grain size [ 34 ].…”

“…As shown in Table 1, different bulk processing techniques would have different advantages, and the rational design for tribological applications of the bulk MMNC materials should consider the overall fabrication/manufacturing feasibility and easiness, setup requirements, energy and processing speed efficiency, and final product quality [52,66]. For example, stirring-casting or ultrasonic-assisted casting may be combined with salt-assisted casting method to overcome wettability issues [67], but this combination may increase the setup complexity, energy inputs, and final MMNC porosity [66,68,69], which may not be suitable for tribo-industries.…”
