Scalar mass stability bound in a simple Yukawa-theory from renormalization group equations

Abstract: Functional Renormalisation Group (FRG) equations are constructed for a simple Yukawa-model with discrete chiral symmetry, including also the effect of a nonzero composite fermion background beyond the conventional scalar condensate. The evolution of the effective potential of the model, generically depending on two invariants, is explored with help of power series expansions. Systematic investigation of the effect of a class of irrelevant operators on the lower (stability) bound allows a non-perturbative exten… Show more

“…However, we were able to construct one particular family of generalized bare potentials that shows some convergence behavior. For this family an example was given that was able to diminish the lower bound below present consistency bounds obtained from finite-order generalizations of the bare action within the considered toy model [66,70,71]. Moreover, we demonstrated how bare potentials can be constructed via reverse engineering such that the effective potential does not suffer from a stability problem and is compatible with observed IR physics.…”

“…In principle, higherorder modifications of the Yukawa sector could also be included, cf. [47][48][49]. We investigate three classes of modifications to the SM-Higgs potential:…”

“…The global properties of the Higgs potential are also intimately related to the questions of vacuum stability and Higgs mass bounds [20][21][22]. In fact, higher-dimensional operators can also increase the stability regime of the vacuum [13,16,[23][24][25][26][27]. The example Higgs potentials studied in this paper suggest new-physics scales well below a possible instability scale of 10 10···12 GeV of the Standard Model.…”
