Scaling of Structural Components by Knowledge-Based Engineering Methods

Abstract: Decreasing the development time is a significant mean for a company operating in the technical area to lower the development cost. Effort invested into developing a given product can be used to derive following variants of the same product by applying a scaling method. Common scaling methods are created in a means of a geometrical scaling without the option of a flexible change of geometry, while maintaining the concept in the main. Therefore a method is proposed for deriving a knowledge based engineering syst… Show more

“…The scaling of a single component in a uniform as well as a partly non-uniform way is a topic described throughout the centuries in the literature. Still, there is no direct way described on how to scale a component geometrically fully non-uniform as well as on how to handle a non-uniform requirement change throughout the scaling increments (Wolniak et al, 2018). Furthermore, the scaling of several independently changing components in an assembly is not handled in any manner.…”

“…Hard formations, narrow curves that have to be drilled or corrosive mediums contribute to a changing requirement according to the drilling location. A description of the scaling literature and the usability in the presented approach is given in (Wolniak et al, 2018). Regarding the proposed approach, the first step is to define the possibility of reducing the complexity of the system.…”

“…Dimensionless products are to be derived from a dimension matrix. Two phenomena are similar when the dimensionless products of a complete set have the same value (Stichlmair, 1990). If all certain dimensionless potency products are constant over the entire area of application, the problem under consideration can be completely transferred from a model to a real size.…”

“…For an effective way of system modeling the separation of domain and process knowledge plays a vital role. Therefore, the approach in this article is to model the components of a given product as separate objects, inheriting their specific domain knowledge, while combining these objects to form the overall system (Wolniak et al, 2018(Wolniak et al, , 2019. Figure 5 gives an overview of the overall functional analysis model structure.…”
