Scaling up of physical activity interventions in Brazil: how partnerships and research evidence contributed to policy action

Abstract: The global health burden due to physical inactivity is enormous and growing. There is a need to consider new ways of generating evidence and to identify the role of government in promoting physical activity at the population level. In this paper, we summarize key findings from a large-scale cross-national collaboration to understand physical activity promotion in Brazil. “…This study was developed by GUIA (Guide for Useful Interventions for Physical Activity in Latin America), a project designed to assess and pro-mote evidence-based strategies to increase physical activity in Latin America 30,31 (Table 1). For the sample size, a prevalence of 50% of health units with physical activity programs was considered, and a four percentage points error; at least 600 health units were required to detect a meaningful difference, and our sample selection surpassed this number.…”

“…Recent national actions have focused on the creation of community health clubs, for which the Health Ministry provides financing with the aim of reducing structural barriers to the access to physical activity practice, particularly among low-income populations. 44 In 2011, these actions were consolidated in the Strategic Action Plan to Confront Noncommunicable Diseases in Brazil, 2011 to 2022, which emphasizes population-based health promotion and prevention, and also prioritizes actions and investments in surveillance and comprehensive care. 45 It includes several quantitative goals to be achieved by 2022 (summarized in Table 3).…”
