Dear Editor, Spondyloarthritis (SpA) is a common chronic inflammatory disease. With the update of the classification criteria for SpA, imaging technologies, especially magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), have increased values for the diagnosis of SpA. The diagnostic values of MRI were stressed in the ASAS classification criteria for axial SpA published in 2009. 1 MRI also plays an important role in the differential diagnosis of SpA. An MRI showing bone marrow edema in the sacroiliac joint is not necessarily SpA. Bone marrow edema can be seen in tumors, infections, degeneration, and sacroiliac joint gout.
