Scanning of the Stomach with 99mTc

Abstract: Technetium-99m, after i. v. administration, is found to be localized in the gastric mucosa, and is subsequently excreted with the stomach juice. Owing to the favorable physical properties of 99mTc, satisfactory scans of the stomach can be made. The presence of neoplasms is shown as areas of lower density of scans. No alcerations or inflammatory processes, however, can be visualized with this method. The technique of obtaining 99mTc and the scanning procedure are presented.

“…These findings should always be pursued and clarified taking into account rare causes as lung, stomach, and breast primary adenocarcinomas and related metastases. [5][6][7] Hybrid SPECT/CT allows more precise anatomical localization and the differentiation of pathological and physiological uptake, increasing the accuracy of image interpretation, and it should be performed whenever possible in such cases. A marked reduction of thyroid uptake was observed, and destructive thyroiditis, likely induced by immunotherapy, was diagnosed.…”

“…The present case confirms how 99m TcO 4 − scintigraphy requires careful scrutiny for nonphysiologic extrathyroid uptakes. These findings should always be pursued and clarified taking into account rare causes as lung, stomach, and breast primary adenocarcinomas and related metastases 5–7 . Hybrid SPECT/CT allows more precise anatomical localization and the differentiation of pathological and physiological uptake, increasing the accuracy of image interpretation, and it should be performed whenever possible in such cases.…”
