Scattering and Filamentation of Electromagnetic Waves by kinetic Drift-Alfvén Waves

Abstract: The parametric interaction between a high frequency EM pump wave propagating in arbitrary direction and a kinetic drift-Alfvén wave in a weakly inhomogeneous low-β plasma is studied. A general nonlinear dispersion relation describing this parametric interaction is derived. Analytic expressions for threshold pump fields and growth rates, for scattering and filamentation of EM waves by kinetic Alfvén waves, drift waves and drift-Alfvén drift-Alfvén waves, are obtained.
