Scavenger receptor-C acts as a receptor for Bacillus thuringiensis vegetative insecticidal protein Vip3Aa and mediates the internalization of Vip3Aa via endocytosis

Abstract: The vegetative insecticidal proteins (Vip), secreted by many Bacillus thuringiensis strains during their vegetative growth stage, are genetically distinct from known insecticidal crystal proteins (ICPs) and represent the second-generation insecticidal toxins. Compared with ICPs, the insecticidal mechanisms of Vip toxins are poorly understood. In particular, there has been no report of a definite receptor of Vip toxins to date. In the present study, we identified the scavenger receptor class C like protein (Sf-… Show more

“…The scavenger receptor class C like protein (Sf‐SR‐C) is also a receptor of the Vip3Aa protoxin. Vip3Aa protein can interact with Sf‐SR‐C in vitro and ex vivo , as demonstrated using affinity magnetic bead and high‐performance liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry (HPLC‐MS/MS) identification . In addition, RNAi mediated silencing of the expression of SR‐C in Sf9 cells and Spodoptera exigua larvae can reduce the toxicity of Vip3Aa.…”

“…The resistance of this strain to Vip3Aa remained unstable after rearing for several generations without Vip3Aa toxin selection . The expression of Vip3A toxin and Cry toxin in the same plant not only increased insecticidal activity against target insects but also reduced the chance of cross resistance …”
