Scavenger receptors in homeostasis and immunity

Abstract: Scavenger receptors were originally identified by their ability to recognize and to remove modified lipoproteins; however, it is now appreciated that they carry out a striking range of functions, including pathogen clearance, lipid transport, the transport of cargo within the cell and even functioning as taste receptors. The large repertoire of ligands recognized by scavenger receptors and their broad range of functions are not only due to the wide range of receptors that constitute this family but also to the… Show more

“…Therefore, macrophages are critical for maintaining homeostasis and healthy tissues by clearing various discarded elements and reducing inflammation. [1][2][3][4] Scavenger receptors (SRs) consist of classes A to I and are expressed on the surfaces of macrophages, dendritic cells, and endothelial cells and initiate the removal of a large repertoire of discarded elements. SRs were identified by their ability to recognize and remove modified or damaged proteins (e.g.…”

“…7) SRs play a key role in the removal of a broad range of discarded elements and were initially identified by their ability to bind and remove modified or damaged endogenous and exogenous molecules, including maleylated protein, fibril amyloid-β, AcLDL, OxLDL, oxidized phosphatidylserine, apoptotic cells, bacteria, bacterial lipopolysaccharides, and viral components.…”

“…7) Nucleolin is a multifunctional shuttling protein that is present in the nucleus, cytoplasm, and on the surface of macrophages. 8,9) We previously identified nucleolin as a scavenger receptor for apoptotic cells 10) and modified proteins such as fibril amyloid-β, 11) advanced glycosylation end products, 12) and maleylated-proteins.…”
