Scent lineups compared across eleven countries: Looking for the future of a controversial forensic technique

Abstract: A scent lineup is generally a procedure whereby a dog's alerting behavior is used to establish that the dog detects two scents, one from a crime scene and one from a suspect, as being identical. The aim of this article is to compare methodologies of using dogs in scent lineups as a means of identifying perpetrators of crimes. It is hoped that this comparative approach, looking at countries where the method is currently or has in the past been used, will help determine what issues should be addressed in order t… Show more

“…For the experiments we used the match-to-sample-likeprotocolemployed in forensic odorology and scientific research 23 , 37 , 38 this method is described in detail by Rodionova et al 23 . In general terms, the procedure consisted of the dog being encouraged to sniff a tube containing a urine sample from a donor with transplanted hepatocarcinoma (odour to search, initial sample), and then prompted to choose from 12 similar tubes in a lineup, among which was a sample of another donor with transplanted hepatocarcinoma (test sample).…”

“…As noted, most research on police K9s is unrelated to their use as a police weapon. Instead, there is a relatively robust research literature concerned with their olfactory abilities (Jezierski et al, 2016;Kokocińska-Kusiak et al, 2021), whether it be for cadavers (Komar, 1999;Riezzo et al, 2014), explosives (Lazarowski et al, 2020) and arson (Scott, 2014), suspect scent lineups (Ferry et al, 2019), or narcotics detection (Abdel Fattah & Gharib, 2020). Relatedly, researchers have investigated the impact of handler beliefs on K9 detection performance (Lit et al, 2011(Lit et al, , 2019.…”
