Scheduling aircraft landings at London Heathrow using a population heuristic

Abstract: With increasing levels of air traf®c, making effective use of limited airport capacity is obviously important. This paper reports on an investigation undertaken by National Air Traf®c Services in the UK into improving runway utilisation at London Heathrow. This investigation centred on developing an algorithm for improving the scheduling of aircraft waiting to land. The heuristic algorithm developed (a population heuristic) is discussed and results presented using actual operational data relating to aircraft l… Show more

“…Sabar et al [3] proposed an iterated local search algorithm, which is a single-solution-based search methodology, to minimize the total penalty of landing deviations from the target landing time. Beasley et al [4] developed a population heuristic to schedule aircraft landings at London Heathrow. In 2006, two heuristic techniques, namely, scatter search and bionomic algorithm, were presented for ALS problems [5].…”

“…So far, many studies have been conducted in order to alleviate airports from congestion and improve the capacity, some of them focused on the airspace and some other only on the airside. Concerning problems related to the airspace, we can find many works about the sequencing and merging or scheduling of arrivals in the TMA (Beasley et al, 2000;Beasley et al, 2001;Hu and Chen, 2005;Michelin et al, 2009;Balakrishnan and Chandran, 2010;Zuniga et al 2011). On the other hand we can also find studies related to ground issues such as gate assignment problem (Bolat, 2000;Dorndorf et al, 2007;Kim and Feron, 2012;Narciso and Piera, 2015), scheduling of departures (Pujet et al, 1999;Rathinam et al 2009;Sandberg et al, 2014;Simaiakis and Balakrishnan, 2015) or airport surface management (Montoya et al, 2010;.…”
