Schiff Bases: Multipurpose Pharmacophores with Extensive Biological Applications

Abstract: Schiff bases are substances prepared generally by the condensation reaction of aldehydes or ketones with amines. They may have substituted aliphatic or aromatic side chains, and hence show extensive biological activities. It is reported that these molecules play an important role in the synthesis of various drugs. This paper focus on the biological activities of Schiff bases of various types and hence makes them important precursors in designing drugs for medical treatment. The biological applications of Schif… Show more

“…Chelation of such compounds with some metals [6–8], halogens [9, 10], oxygen [11], etc. demonstrated to have applications as drugs and possess many biological activities, such as, anti-viral [4], anti-bacteria [11], gastroprotective activity [12], antioxidant [13], anti-inflammation [14] and anti-tumors [15]. Specifically, it is noted that bromine substituted complex of Schiff bases exhibits excellent activity against gastro ulcer in rodents [16].…”

“…Schiff bases are getting increasing interest nowadays because of their versatile applications in various fields. 1 These are usually prepared by the condensation of aldehydes and/or ketones with primary amines in a simple way with high yield. 2 The Schiff bases derived from aromatic aldehydes are more stable due to the presence of conjugation as compared to those which were prepared from aliphatic aldehydes.…”
