School-Based Primary Prevention of Depressive Symptomatology in Adolescents

Abstract: Two school-based primary prevention interventions for adolescent depressive symptomatology and disorder were examined in separate studies with high school samples of 9th and 10th-grade adolescents. In Study 1, a three-session educational intervention was associated with a short-term reduction in extreme-scoring cases of depressive symptoms among boys, but not girls, when compared to a randomly assigned control condition. However, this effect was not sustained over a 12-week follow-up period. In Study 2, a five… Show more

“…Findings from previous studies conflict with regard to the role of sex as a moderator. Prevention effects have differed by sex in at least four studies: two of these report stronger effects for female participants than males (Petersen, Leffert, Graham, Alwin, & Ding, 1997;Seligman, Schulman, DeRubeis, & Hollon, 1999) and two report stronger effects for males than females (Clarke, Hawkins, Murphy, & Sheeber, 1993;Reivich, 1996). Previous research also suggests that prevention effects may be moderated by initial symptom level.…”

“…Interessanterweise widersprechen die empirischen Daten zur Prä-vention bei Jugendlichen jedoch diesen Annahmen. So konnten Clarke et al [1993] nur 13-19% der Schüler, die sie als risikobelastet identifiziert hatten, zur Teilnahme an ihrem selektiven Präventionsprogramm motivieren. Weiterhin berichten Gillham et al [1995] eine Dropout-Rate von 30%.…”
