School Counselors’ Experiences and Responses During the South Carolina “1,000-Year Flood”

Abstract: The purpose of our study was to explore the experiences of school counselors during the 2015 South Carolina “1,000-year flood.” We used consensual qualitative research methodology and identified seven domains that described the participants’ personal and professional experiences during and after the flood. We also identified the actions they took within their school system to respond to the aftermath of the flood. We discuss findings and implications for school counselors and school counselor educators.

“…The first author conducted and recorded phone interviews with each participant, following a semistructured interview protocol of 10 open-ended questions (Hays & Singh, 2012). Interviews ranged in length from 26 to 64 min, with an average length of 39 min, aligning with previous CQR studies in school counseling (Limberg et al, 2020;Springer et al, 2020). Upon completion of the interviews, a graduate assistant transcribed the interview recordings in preparation for data analysis.…”
