School Readiness Research in Latin America: Findings and Challenges

Abstract: Educational results in Latin America (LA) are well below those of developed countries. One factor that influences how well children do at school is school readiness. In this article, we review studies conducted in LA on the readiness skills of preschool children. We begin by discussing contextual factors that affect what is expected of children upon school entry, and we examine critical aspects of children's developmental contexts in LA. We then review local research on the level and determinants of three read… Show more

“…Furthermore, when Latino parents do engage their children in academic activities, these are consistent or complementary with the teacher's recommendations and assigned homework (Gonzalez et al, 2019;Sonnenschein and Dowling, 2019). In addition, Latin American families show some differences regarding access to resources, home learning experiences, and academic expectations, compared to parents from other countries (Strasser et al, 2016). Thus, early numeracy skills develop from an early age within the home learning environment, where parents provide a wide range of opportunities depending on their cultural context.…”

“…In Latin American countries, access to educational resources is unequal and parents are less likely to engage in activities that are common in other countries with access to more resources, such as shared book reading (see Strasser et al, 2016, for a review). Such factors may contribute to different patterns of parental activities in Latin American countries.…”
