Schwannoma of Foot and Ankle: Seven Case Reports and Literature Review

Abstract: Background: Schwannoma is most often grown on the trunk, upper and lower extremities, and head and neck, but rarely on the foot. This study aimed to reveal clinical presentations, histopathology and treatment options for schwannoma of the foot. Materials and Methods: Seven schwannomas out of 174 soft-tissue tumors on the foot and ankle were retrieved from our Institute in a 3-year period, and 42 schwannomas on the foot and ankle in the literature in a 30-year period were reviewed. Results: The incidence of sch… Show more

“…Rarely plexiform schwannoma can present on the lower extremities particularly on the foot. According to previous reports, the presentation of this tumor on the dorsum or interdigital space of the foot seems to be the rarest manifestation (4). Herein, we describe a rare case of pretty large plexiform schwannoma on the toe in a male patient.…”

“…11,12 Benign nerve sheath tumors may be well-defined solid masses but are usually seen in tarsal tunnel. 14 The foot is a frequent site for foreign body granulomas which may present as pseudo-tumor due to vascularity on color Doppler and enhancement on MRI depending upon the adjacent granulomatous reaction. Soft tissue sarcomas are commonly found in the lower extremities of young adults with predilection near joint surfaces, generally on the dorsum of the foot.…”

“…Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is the most useful method for evaluating the anatomical extent of the lesion before surgical planning (5,11). However, the morphological imaging features demonstrated limited diagnostic precision for differentiation of benign and malignant PNSTs with specificities of 18-82% and sensitivities of 18-94%.…”

“…Ultrasound or computed tomography (CT) may be useful in some patients for image-guided biopsies and bone scintigraphy can be helpful in assessing osseous involvement (11,15).…”
