Schwannomatosis of Cervical Vagus Nerve

Abstract: Cervical vagal schwannoma is a rare entity among lesions presenting as a neck mass. They are usually slow-growing benign lesions closely associated with the vagus nerve. They are usually solitary and asymptomatic. Multiple schwannomas occurring in patients without neurofibromatosis (NF) are rare and have recently been referred to as schwannomatosis. Here, we present a case of a neck mass that had imaging features suggestive of vagal schwannoma and was operated upon. Intraoperatively, it was discovered to be a … Show more

“…Vagus nerve schwannoma at cerebellopontine angle is quite rare besides such a huge lesion (about 5cm×4.5cm) grow through jugular foramen to poststyloid parapharyngeal space [2,4] . Surgical resection is the treatment of rst choice even if its close relationship with nerve bers, from which it arises, threats vagal nerve preservation [5,6] . The size of the tumor is directly related to the risk of surgery [7] .…”

“…Since vagal schwannomas are almost always benign, a conservative approach should always be considered in first instance when the integrity of the nerve is in question. 8 In the presence of postoperative vocal cord palsy, aggressive voice therapy, for vocal cord compensation, should be started soon after the surgery. 9 The prognosis of schwannomas after complete excision is good, and recurrence is rare.…”

“…3 5 However, as with neurofibromas, cases of schwannomatosis involving the lower cranial nerves (apart from the vestibulocochlear nerve) are rare. 3 6 7 8 9 Here, we report on a rare case of schwannomatosis involving the left spinal accessory nerve and provide imaging findings and a description of the surgical approach.…”
