Science Analysis of “Nginang “ Culture In Context of Science Technology Engineering And Mathematics (Stem) Integration of Ethnoscience

Abstract: The ancestors in Indonesia often do nginang activities as a culture of hereditary. Nginang culture is the name of the tradition of eating betel and usually, before eaten betelau first mixed with tobacco, lime, gambier, and betel nut. In this research, a qualitative descriptive analysis of nginang culture was conducted to reveal the scientific explanation related to Nginang culture in Indonesia. In the research data revealed through Interview and adoption, subsequent reconstruction of science science-based scie… Show more

“…Nginang culture can strengthen teeth because in betel nut contains essential oils and phenylpropanoid tannin compounds. Mixing betel leaves with some chemicals contains the concept of mixed chemistry, acid-base reactions, and changes in substances (Sudarmin et al 2018). Sumarni et al (2016) describe the production process of palm sugar which is a legacy of ancestral knowledge, there are many public sciences that can be reconstructed into scientific knowledge that can be a source of science learning for students.…”

“…The ethnoscience approach is a must in maintaining and preserving local culture by applying it in education, especially in learning science which aims to improve students' knowledge, skills, values, and attitudes so that they can play a role in the environment (Atmoko & Wulansari, 2020;Octana, 2020). The benefits of applying the ethnoscience approach in science learning can be seen in (Lestari & Fitriani, 2016;Supriyadi, et al, 2016;Aji, 2017;Yuliana, 2017;Sudarmin et al, 2018;Puspasari et al, 2019). Ethnoscience learning has a positive influence on the classroom and affective learning in increasing student participation in class.…”
