Interest in new empiricisms and transdisciplinary methods has led many social inquirers to engage with 20th-century post-classical physical science. Many of these projects have focused on alternative matter–mind mixtures and in/organic variation, concerned that past theories of sociality have dismissed the vibrancy and animacy of the nonhuman material world. This paper explores the power of speculative fiction to help us rethink empiricism in posthuman ecologies of the Anthropocene, in the midst of post-truth conditions and growing science denialism. We foreground speculative fiction as a way to open up scientific imaginaries, rethinking the relationship between nature, technics, and human “sense” making. We show how such texts offer alternative images of research methods for studying pluralist ecologies and new forms of worldly belonging.

The movement of STEM has become the synonym for the renewal of science education. Nevertheless, the movement of STEM is not unambiguous. The article discusses two contradicting interpretations of STEM. The first one descends from the Weltanschauung of Modernity, the second one – from the critics of Modernity. According to the former, STEM education deals with the purification and integration of the disciplines of science education and answers the needs of the high-tech labour market. The latter one emphasizes the syncretic and anthropological character of the ecological mind and the changing patterns of consumption and production in favour of sustainable development. This version of STEM is closely related to the development of STS, which paves the way from purification and integration to the translation and human and non-human networking (ANT). The article searches for the answer to the question of how to deal with the confronting STEM versions in the process of the renewal of science education.

This article focuses on Hallam Stevens’ work Life out of Sequence: A Data-Driven History of Bioinformatics and stresses the important process of data generation and how this process has now become an issue, in some fields, beyond human control. We suggest the best way to approach the proliferation of data is to adopt an onto-epistemic position. We further explore the rise of an algorithmic society and the problem “gaps” created in date generation. We finish the article by exploring the fruitful ways Mark B. N. Hansen’s latest work, Feed Forward, plays in helping researchers understand the proliferation of data generation.
