Scientific Investigation of Brain-Behavior Relationships Using the Halstead-Reitan Battery

Abstract: The Reitan Society recognizes that adhering to the scientific method in conducting clinical neuropsychological evaluations is integral to neurodiagnostic accuracy. The role of science in clinical studies is discussed with specific reference to the scientific features of the Halstead-Reitan Test Battery (HRB). The diagnostic precision of the HRB across a wide range of neuropathological states is presented as a product of rigorous scientific interplay between empirical observation and the development of a concep… Show more

“…Although fewer in number, all studies that used the Stroop test (60,75,78), block design test (60,63,80), and finger tapping test (62,78) also found associations. These tests assess executive function/processing speed (86), executive function/visuospatial ability (87), and simple motor speed (88), respectively. Impairments in these cognitive functions characterize vascular dementia (89,90) and have been linked to white matter hyperintensity volume, a possible sign of asymptomatic CVD (91).…”

“…For years, clinicians and researchers examined neuropsychological functioning using extensive batteries such as the Halstead-Reitan and Luria-Nebraska (Groth-Marnat, 2005; Kane, Parsons, Goldstein, & Moses, 1987;Kats & Goldstein, 1993;Larrabee, Millis, & Myers, 2008;Mittenberg, Kasprisin, & Farage, 1985;Steinmeyer, 1984;Sweeney, Slade, Ivins, Nemeth, Ranks, & Sica, 2007). One recent measure that may have some advantages due to its reduced time of administration is the Repeatable Battery for the Assessment of Neuropsychological Status (RBANS; Randolph, 1998;Randolph, Tierney, Mohr, & Chase, 1998).…”
