Scientific production in Computer Science: A comparative study of Brazil and other countries

Abstract: In this paper we present a study about scientific production in Computer Science in Brazil and several other countries, as measured by the number of articles in journals and conference proceedings indexed by ISI and by Scopus. We compare the Brazilian production from 2001 to 2005 with some Latin American, Latin European, BRIC (Brazil, Russia, India, China), and other relevant countries (South Korea, Australia and USA). We also classify and compare these countries according to the ratio of publications in journ… Show more

“…Surprisingly, there have not been a large number of bibliometric studies measuring the published research outputs of computer science. Some of them have focused on individual countries or groups of countries: China [1], Malaysia [2], India [3], Brazil [4], India and China [5], Eastern Europe [6], BRIC and a few other countries [7], or China, India, Japan, and three major Western nations [8]. The research performance of global universities in computer science has been explored too [9].…”

“…This assertion is supported by the PISA results (INEP 2011), which show that the performance of Brazilian students in the basic institutions of education is lower than many Latin American countries like Chile, Uruguay and Mexico. However, when analyzing the scientific production of Brazilian higher education institutions there is the opposite, with the country being well ahead of other Latin American neighbors (Glänzel et al 2006;Wainer et al 2009;Wagner and Wong 2011). So based on the exposed, we conclude that the current knowledge generated in higher institutions is in practice ineffective and a small part of this knowledge comes to schools.…”
