BackgroundScientometric studies are one of the most important and useful tools to assess the research performance and knowledge impact of researchers. The aim of this study was to map out the scientific performance of the Iranian medical academics with respect to a detailed range of scientometric indicators.MethodsUsing scientometric approach, individual and scientific performance data of medical academic staff were extracted from the Iranian Scientometric Information Database (ISID). Total number of publications, total number of citations, citation per paper, h-index, international collaboration, self-citation, SJR decile, i10-Index, Quartile distribution were the studied scientometric variables. Out of the registered 19,023 academic staff, 746 were included in the study through simple random sampling method using random sample extraction function in STATA. Data were analyzed using STATA 14 statistical software package.ResultsMost of the included academicians were men (60%). A total of 13,682 articles were published by them until 2018, being cited 114,928 times with a mean of 5.77 citation per paper. H-index median was three and about 90% of the staff had an H-index below 10. Number of published papers, cite per paper and H-index metrics were significantly different with respect to gender, academic position/degree, and general field of study (p < 0.05). About 2.5% of published articles were contributed through international collaboration. The scientometric performance of academic staff was highly diverse with respect to the employing institution and its national classification group (type 1, 2, 3).ConclusionsNevertheless to the great scientific production of medical academics, individual and institutional characteristics were identified as effective variables in academics research performance and should be considered in their assessment. Academicians affiliated with type 2 and 3 universities (based on national ranking of medical universities) had weaker research performance compared to those affiliated with type 1 universities. However, low rate of international research collaborations was a common challenge in medical universities.

IntroductionIn the near future, retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) will be the most significant cause of blindness in upper and middle-income countries. Due to the increasing survival chances for premature and low birth weight infants and the importance of the diagnosis and treatment of ROP, this study was aimed at determining the prevalence of ROP and its related factors in Sanandaj, Iran, in 2014.MethodsThis cross-sectional study was performed on 47 preterm infants, weighing less than 2000 g or with a gestational age of less than of 34 weeks. The sampling method was census. From the first examination to 1 to 4 weeks later, until retinal vascularization completion, examinations were performed by the same ophthalmologist. Data were analyzed using SPSS version 20 and frequency, mean, SD and Chi-square tests.ResultsThe prevalence of ROP in the infants was 10.6%. Prevalence among girls was 16% and among boys it was 4.5%. The results showed that 23.5% of infants with ROP needed mechanical ventilation. The difference between the two groups was statistically significant (p = 0.031).ConclusionIn this study, the prevalence of ROP in the NICU and neonatal ward of Besat Hospital in Sanandaj was low. However, due to serious consequences of the disease in premature infants, timely screening, determination, and control of risk factors provided necessary support to manage the disease.

Background and Aim: Photodynamic therapy is a localized non-invasive treatment modality for the periodontal disease. Some evidences have shown that this technique is effective in improving the treatment outcome. This study compared the effects of photodynamic therapy with and without scaling and root planing and scaling and root planing alone on the clinical parameters of the chronic periodontitis. Materials and Methods:In this single-blind, randomized clinical trial, 30 chronic periodontitis patients (10 for each modality) were selected and three different methods; photodynamic therapy alone (Group1) by FotoSan 630 system, scaling and root planning (SRP) alone (Group2), scaling and root planing combined with photodynamic therapy (Group3) were done for them randomly. Clinical parameters of probing pocket depth (PPD), bleeding on probing (BOP), and clinical attachment level (CAL) were measured at the baseline and 3, 6 and 12 weeks later. One-sided analysis of variance test was used to analyze PPD and CAL among the treatment groups in each time interval while the paired comparisons were carried out by employment of Dunnett's test. The treatment groups were statically analyzed by the chi-square test regarding BOP.Results: Before the treatment; no significant differences observed among treatment modalities regarding clinical parameters; while the differences were significant at three weeks (p<0.0001 for PPD and CAL; p<0.001 for BOP); six weeks (p<0.0001 for PPD and CAL, p<0.002 for BOP); and 12 weeks after the treatment (all: p<0.0001). The least PPD and CAL values and the most frequency of non-bleeding on probing status were measured for PDT+SRP modality at three, six, and twelve weeks after the treatment. Conclusion:Photodynamic therapy supported the clinical parameters of periodontitis similar to SRP; however, PDT combined with SRP demonstrated a better result than that of SRP alone. Therefore, PDT combined with SRP can be used to improve outcomes of clinical parameters of periodontitis as compared to SRP alone in the short-term.
