Scientists study deep geological structure between New Hebrides Arc and Eastern Australian Margin

Abstract: French and Australian scientists hope that deep seismic profiling performed earlier this year in the southwest Pacific will improve understanding of the geological framework, crustal characteristics, and evolution of basins and ridges between the eastern Australian margin and the New Hebrides Trench system. The data already have indicated that the basements of several basins are thinned and oceanic, that the basements of several ridges are continental, and that, contrary to previous thinking, the Loyalty Basin… Show more

“…These had acronyms such as Zonéco, Extraplac, Noucaplac and Austradec (for a compilation, see Sutherland et al 2012). These programmes produced essential contributions that led to the integration of the onshore and offshore geology of New Caledonia and a better appreciation of its context in the broader SW Pacific environment (Lafoy et al 1998(Lafoy et al , 2005Van De Beuque 1999;Auzende et al 2000;Collot 2009). The Pleistocene-Holocene lagoon-reef complex of New Caledonia was thoroughly investigated from the early 1990s to the early 2000s (Cabioch et al 2008a, b).…”

“…A bottom-simulating reflector (BSR, Fig. 2c) observed in the seismic data previously on the eastern flank of the LHR and the Fairway Basin (Ramsay et al, 1997;Exon et al, 1998Exon et al, , 2007Lafoy et al, 1998Lafoy et al, , 2005Bernardel et al, 1999;Auzende et al, 2000) led to speculation regarding the existence of methane hydrate resources underlying the area. However, the results of the AUSFAIR MD153 survey (2006), in conjunction with further analysis of seismic and DSDP 208 data, have subsequently indicated that the apparent BSR is more likely to be related to an Opal-A/Opal-CT transition front (Colwell et al, 2006;Nouzé et al, 2009).…”
