Scientometric trends and knowledge maps of global health systems research

Abstract: BackgroundIn the last few decades, health systems research (HSR) has garnered much attention with a rapid increase in the related literature. This study aims to review and evaluate the global progress in HSR and assess the current quantitative trends.MethodsBased on data from the Web of Science database, scientometric methods and knowledge visualization techniques were applied to evaluate global scientific production and develop trends of HSR from 1900 to 2012.ResultsHSR has increased rapidly over the past 20 … Show more

“…Quantity was determined by the number of publications and the growth trends were measured through two related parameters, namely, relative growth rate (RGR) and doubling time (Dt) [30]. The academic impact of the papers was measured using the total local citation score (TLCS), total global citation score (TGCS), and average global citation score (AGCS) [31]. Co-authorship and social network analysis were also used to study the collaboration at the country and institution levels [18].…”

“…WoS provides more comprehensive data (such as author information, journal, and publication year) that allow for in-depth analysis than other databases like Scopus and MEDLINE. Articles in WoS are tagged according to document type, such as review articles or original articles, following a standardized structure, which is vital for a literature analysis [24]. …”

“…It is a comprehensive application of mathematics and statistics to conduct quantitative analysis and description of various characteristics of published literatures, so as to provide an easy method to evaluate research status and predict the developmental trends (19). Therefore, bibliometric analysis, including co-citation analysis, co-word analysis, and other methods, can help researchers grasp the changing trends of a given research field (20). While these methods have enriched the research content of MRI studies on schizophrenia, at present, few studies have attempted to focus on and sort out the important issues and research context from the perspective of bibliometrics.…”
