Scintillation properties of Gd3Al2Ga3O12:Ce3+ single crystal scintillators

Abstract: The scintillation properties of Gd 3 Al 2 Ga 3 O 12 :Ce 3+ (GAGG:Ce) single crystals grown by Czochralski method with 1 at.% cerium in the melt were investigated and results compared with so far published results in literature. The light yield (LY) and energy resolution were measured using XP5200B photomultiplier. Despite about twice higher LY for GAGG:Ce, the energy resolution is only slightly better than that of LuAG:Ce due to its worse intrinsic resolution and non-proportionality of LY. The LY dependences o… Show more

“…The measuring system consists of an inorganic GAGG scintillation crystal with a high density of ρ GAGG 6.69 g cm ¡3 [12] and a high effective atomic number of Z eff 53.9 [13], that maximizes the probability of interaction for gammaray photons in the crystal. With a high light output of about Y GAGG 48 000 MeV ¡1 [12], GAGG is an appropriate scintillation material for spectroscopy. Furthermore, the intrinsic background of GAGG is very low, which is important for the detection of contamination with a low activity.…”

“…Although GAGG:Ce has recently been widely applied, only a small number of studies have been performed on this material, which have focused on limited topics for specific applications [36,37]. In particular, the energy dependence of the light yield and the temperature characteristic, which are important for determining the GAGG:Ce performance, have not been investigated sufficiently.…”

“…In small-size detectors, these secondary gamma radiations have more probability of escaping as compared to relatively larger or intermediate-sized detectors [1]. The increase in crystal size raises the photo fraction, owing to a higher contribution from Compton scattering as well [29]. The photo fraction is a direct measure of the probability that gamma radiation interacted with the material through any interactions, ultimately depositing all its energy within the detector.…”
