SCMA for downlink multiple access of 5G wireless networks

Abstract: Sparse code multiple access (SCMA) is a new frequency domain non-orthogonal multiple-access technique which can improve spectral efficiency of wireless radio access. With SCMA, different incoming data streams are directly mapped to codewords of different multi-dimensional cookbooks, where each codeword represents a spread transmission layer. Multiple SCMA layers share the same time-frequency resources of OFDMA. The sparsity of codewords makes the near-optimal detection feasible through iterative message passin… Show more

“…In contrast, code-domain NOMA utilizes user-specific spreading sequences that are either sparse sequences or non-orthogonal cross-correlation sequences of low correlation coefficient. This can be further divided into a few different classes, such as low-density spreading CDMA (LDS-CDMA) [4,5], low-density spreading-based OFDM (LDS-OFDM) [6,7], and sparse code multiple access (SCMA) [8,9]. The use of low-density spreading sequences helps LDS-CDMA to limit the impact of interference on each chip of basic CDMA systems.…”

“…In more depth, P u denotes the power available for the u th MU, while E U u=1 x u 2 represents the power averaged over all constellation points given by the sum 2 In SCMA encoder, the information bits destined for a MU may be further divided into multiple data streams. Each of the data stream requires a specific signature and hence invokes an additional column in the SCMA signature matrix, which was interpreted as occupying a SCMA layer in [22], [30]. Without loss of generality, throughout this paper, we assume that a MU only utilizes a single SCMA layer.…”

“…In Korea, Samsung tested and verified the technical feasibility of millimeter wave in the bands of about 28 GHz [2]. Other possible candidate technologies such as massive MIMO [3], novel multiple access [4], and new channel coding [5][6][7] have attracted more and more interest. The International Telecommunication Union (ITU) has also started its study on the International Mobile Telecommunication system towards 2020 (IMT-2020) since 2013 [8].…”
