Scoping review of Neglected Tropical Disease Interventions and Health Promotion: A framework for successful NTD interventions as evidenced by the literature

Abstract: Background Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs) affect more than one billion people globally. A Public Library of Science (PLOS) journal dedicated to NTDs lists almost forty NTDs, while the WHO prioritises twenty NTDs. A person can be affected by more than one disease at the same time from a range of infectious and non-infectious agents. Many of these diseases are preventable, and could be eliminated with various public health, health promotion and medical interventions. This scoping review aims to determine the… Show more

“…Another possible factor affecting the progression towards elimination of these diseases is lack of a coordinated implementation of other interventions along with MDA for effective prevention and control of schistosomiasis and STH. These other interventions are intensified disease management to reduce morbidity, vector and ecology management for transmission control, public health services and provision of safe water, sanitation and hygiene [ 3 , 4 , 29 , 36 , 49 , 50 ].…”

“…These multi-level influences may dynamically interact, interrelate or be interdependent across different levels so that the model functions as a whole system. This model explains the interactive relationships between individuals and environments ( 26 , 27 ). During the COVID-19 pandemic, it has been widely applied to examine multilevel factors influencing COVID-19 preventive behaviours such as mask use, social distancing and vaccine trust ( 28 31 ).…”

“…The control and/or elimination of these NTDs are now on top of the agenda of endemic countries’ control programs and stakeholders in their efforts to achieve Millennium Development Goals for sustainable poverty reduction [ 1 , 4 , 7 ]. Five public-health interventions: (1) preventive chemotherapy (PCT), (2) innovative and intensified disease management, (3) vector control and pesticide management, (4) safe drinking-water, basic sanitation and hygiene (WASH) and (5) zoonotic disease management, have been identified to accelerate the prevention, control, elimination and eradication of NTDs, more effective impact being achieved when these interventions are combined [ 1 , 8 ].…”
