Abstract: Abstract. Investigation of Scots pine annual radial increment was carried out in the surroundings of one of the largest pollution sources in Lithuania -the cement plant "Akmenės cementas". The main objective of the investigation was to analyse possible impact of climatic and anthropogenic factors on the radial growth of Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) stands growing in the local impact zone of the plant. Investigation has shown that in peat-bog sites active vegetation period temperature higher than the long-t… Show more

“…Before now the investigations in the vicinity of "Akmenės cementas" factory were related to analyzing of tree radial increment and assessment of forest ecosystems health condition. The questions of Scots pine radial growth dynamics, changes peat soil features and communities of pedobionts due to the alkalizing impact of "Akmenės cementas" pollution (Stravinskienė, Kubertavičienė 2001;Stravinskienė, Erlickytė-Marčiukaitienė 2009;Armolaitis et al 2003), analyzing of Scots pine needles surface characteristics (Kupčinskienė, Huttunen 2005) were tackled.…”

“…Some of these elements might be derived from anthropogenic activities. Thus, dendrochemical analysis -the chemical analysis of accurate dating of tree-rings -can be beneficial for the reconstruction of environmental pollution events (Padilla, Anderson 2002;Augustin et al 2005;Stravinskienė, Erlickytė-Marčiukaitienė 2009).…”

“…Decades of anthropogenic activities have led to higher amounts of trace metals (TMs) reaching forests (and solitary trees) in the form of dry and wet deposition. Synergetic effect of TMs with other industrial contaminants inhibits tree vitality and depresses tree nutritional functions (Ozolinius, Sujetovienė 2002, Rademacher 2003Stravinskiene, Šimatonytė 2008;Stravinskienė, Erlickytė-Marčiulionienė 2009).…”
