ABCX Model of Family Stress and Coping

Abstract: The ABC‐X model is used for analyzing stress and coping within families. The model consists of (A) the stressor event, (B) the resources available to a family, (C) the family's perceptions of the stressor, and (X) the likelihood of crisis. Variables B and C determine whether the stressor event (A) results in crisis. The ABC‐X model has been refined through the inclusion of additional factors such as a family's social context and further developed into the double ABC‐X model by subsequent research. “…Previous studies emphasized the importance to differentiate between objective and subjective experiences of stressful circumstances. Objective negative economic events such as job loss lead to subjective experiences of these events, resulting in stress (Hill, 1958; Rosino, 2016). The subjective experiences or perceptions do not have to originate from actual events and can induce stress similarly to objective experiences (Hill, 1958).…”

“…Similar to present-day economic hardship, the expectation of economic hardship likely influences family life. Perceptions of the future can shape current behavior and thus influence families (Mantler, Matejicek, Matheson, & Anisman, 2005; Rosino, 2016). People who are uncertain about their future economic situation likely anticipate an economic pressure in the near future and therefore may become more distressed, anxious, and both emotionally and physically exhausted (Mantler et al, 2005; Standing, 2011).…”

“…A Dementia-Community Adaptation Model (D-CAM) will be used to guide this study ( Figure 1). The D-CAM was developed by the principal investigator from the integration of key concepts from the Family Stress Theory (Rosino, 2016), Village Model (Scharlach, Graham, & Lehning, 2011), Eden Alternative ® (2016), and Dementia-Friendly America ® (2015).…”

“…A Dementia‐Community Adaptation Model (D‐CAM) will be used to guide this study (Figure ). The D‐CAM was developed by the principal investigator from the integration of key concepts from the Family Stress Theory (Rosino, ), Village Model (Scharlach, Graham, & Lehning, ), Eden Alternative® (), and Dementia‐Friendly America® (). D‐CAM is an innovative model for explaining how community adaptation to caregiver‐related family stressors affects family well‐being.…”
