B‐mode ultrasound and contrast‐enhanced ultrasound for evaluation of pneumonia: A pictorial essay

Abstract: Due to their often peripheral pleural‐based location, pneumonias can be visualised by B‐mode ultrasound. Therefore, sonography can be used as an alternative imaging modality to chest X‐ray in suspected cases of pneumonia. Depending on the clinical background of the patient, and various underlying pathological mechanisms, a heterogeneous pattern of pneumonia is seen in both B‐mode lung ultrasound and contrast‐enhanced ultrasound. Here, we describe the spectrum of sonographic manifestations of pneumonic/inflamma… Show more

“…Another finding, known as the “shred sign,” involves the previously smooth border of the lung becoming jagged, irregular, and blurred. Additionally, the presence of a hyperechogenic air bronchogram within the consolidation or a focal B-line pattern can also suggest pneumonia [ 50 ]. It is imperative to appropriately interpret these findings in conjunction with the clinical presentation [ 51 ].…”

“…Typically, all viral pneumonias show an absence of relevant pleural effusion. However, high-resolution ultrasound probes are almost always able to detect small quantities of pleural fluid in the posterior and lateral costodiaphragmatic recess, especially with patients in the sitting position 2 11 19 20 22 24 29 30 31 32 .…”

“…In some areas, such as lung ultrasound, POCUS users have created a new application for diagnostic ultrasound and are leading the way into areas unexplored by traditional ultrasound. In this issue of AJUM, Zadeh et al 4 present a review and pictorial essay on the assessment of pneumonia using contrast-enhanced ultrasound and B-mode imaging, correlating lung ultrasound with CT. The portability and repeatability of the ultrasound examination, as well as its correlation with CT findings, suggest untapped clinical application.…”
