Examining Health‐Related Quality of Life (HRQoL), disease‐specific quality of life, and coping behaviors in adolescents with renal disease

Abstract: Introduction: To examine and compare the Health-Related Quality of Life (HRQoL) and disease-specific HRQoL of pediatric renal dialysis and transplant patients based on patients' perspectives. The coping strategies employed by these two groups of patients were also investigated. Methods: Ten adolescents who had undergone kidney transplants (mean age 17.80 Ϯ 1.55 years) and 19 adolescents who were receiving dialysis treatments (mean age 17.16 Ϯ 2.19 years) participated in the study and were asked to complete thr… Show more

“…8,9 Along with clinical treatments, arising comorbidities associated with ESRD can adversely affect physical and psychosocial HRQoL. 10 Multiple case-controlled studies have reported lower HRQoL in pediatric ESRD patients compared with their healthy counterparts, 8,[11][12][13][14][15][16] but aside from lowered physical functioning, little is understood about how the RRT modalities impact the different dimensions of HRQoL. 17,18 Most HRQoL studies examining pediatric ESRD have been performed in small patient samples, producing conflicting results for subscale determinants of HRQoL, limiting generalizability and leading to inconclusive health-related predictors and recommendations.…”

“…Since coping with the eff ects of ESRD is essential for patients who receive haemodialysis treatment ( Tay, Wan, Aw, & Kim, 2011 ), a number of studies have thoroughly investigated the issue. Norhayati, et al .…”
