HemiPy: A Python module for automated estimation of forest biophysical variables and uncertainties from digital hemispherical photographs

Abstract: Digital hemispherical photography (DHP) is widely used to derive forest biophysical variables including leaf, plant, and green area index (LAI, PAI and GAI), the fraction of intercepted photosynthetically active radiation (FIPAR), and the fraction of vegetation cover (FCOVER). However, the majority of software packages for processing DHP data are based on a graphical user interface, making programmatic analysis difficult. Meanwhile, few natively support analysis of RAW image formats, while none incorporate the… Show more

“…In all cases, LAI was determined via digital hemispherical photography (DHP), using either a Nikon Coolpix 4500 and FC-E8 fisheye lens (Nikon Inc., Melville, NY, USA), Canon EOS 6D (Canon, Tokyo, Japan) and Sigma 8 mm F3.5 EX DG fisheye lens (Sigma, Kawasaki, Japan), or Canon EOS 60D and Sigma 4.5 mm F2.8 EX DC fisheye lens [37,63]. Images from the Valencia Anchor Station 2017 campaign were processed with HemiPy [65]. Those from the Wytham Woods 2018 and 2021 campaigns (which consisted of both upwardsand downwards-facing images to capture the overstory and understory) were processed with CAN-EYE [66].…”

“…At each site, in situ reference measurements were acquired using digital hemispherical photography (DHP) and processed with HemiPy [26], as adopted by the GBOV service, using default settings. At NEON sites, images were acquired in both upwards-and downwards-facing directions using a Nikon D750, D800 or D810 digital single lens reflex (DSLR) camera equipped with an AF Fisheye-Nikkor 16mm f/2.8D full-frame fisheye lens.…”
