Abstract

Enzyme; alkaline phosphodiesterase and phosphomonoesterase; EC 3.1.3.1; a metalloprotein that contains one Fe 3+ ion and two Ca 2+ ions.Bacillus subtilis PhoD is an extracytoplasmic phosphodiesterase that catalyzes the hydrolysis of phosphodiester bonds. It also possesses phosphomonoesterase activity. In vitro it hydrolyses compounds containing phosphoester bonds but it does not cleave phosphorus-nitrogen or phosphorus-carbon bonds. 2 It has been postulated that in vivo it releases phosphate from the cell wall teichoic acid. 3
