Islam and Families

Abstract

The image of families in Muslim countries is mainly the outcome of both the way family relationships are portrayed in Islam and the cultural specificity of individual Muslim countries. The Quran and Sunna present a holistic vision of the main constituents of family relations and specified gender‐based roles, and define the obligations of parents to their children. Given the important role played by the family in defining the main derivatives of the Islamic um'ma (nation), Islam places a fundamental emphasis on marriage and marital obligations.
