pH‐responsive alginate–pectin polymeric rafts and their characterization

Abstract: Aim of the present work was to develop alginate-pectin rafts by using box behnken design to provide symptomatic relief from gastroesophageal reflux disorders by forming floating gel or raft on the top of gastric contents. Sodium alginate and pectin were used as raft-forming polymers, sodium bicarbonate as gas-generating substance, and calcium carbonate for generation of calcium ions. Physical test of all compressed formulations were within pharmacopoeial limits. Effect of pH of medium on raft formation was obs… Show more

“…Results showed that the formulation had a significant potential to be considered as a raft forming formulation for the treatment of GORD. 73 The chemical characteristics of alginate rafts for good raft performance were measured to explain how the physicochemical properties of the material used in formulations have an impact on its raft-forming capability. The formulations investigated were GDA, Gaviscon Original, Peptac Liquid, Algycon tablets, Maalox RefluRapid liquid suspension, Mylan Liquid Suspension, and Rennie Duo liquid suspension.…”

“…Bacterial cellulose–high methylated pectin films were developed to encapsulate and release biomacromolecules such as human serum albumin (Cacicedo et al, ). Alginate–pectin polymeric rafts showed pH‐responsive property and showed potential for the treatment of gastro‐esophageal reflux disorders (Hanif & Abbas, ). Chitosan, due to its negative charge, was also widely used to prepare different nanostructures, in combination with pectin.…”
