Semi‐IPN superabsorbent polymer based on itaconic acid and polyvinyl alcohol with improved gel strength and salt resistance

Abstract: Semi-interpenetrating polymer network (semi-IPN) technology was introduced in order to improve the gel strength and salt resistance of itaconic acid (IA)-based superabsorbent polymers (SAPs). A semi-IPN SAP based on IA and 2-acrylamido-2-methyl-1-propanesulfonic acid (AMPS) was synthesized. Polymerization was performed using a one-pot method in an aqueous solution in the presence of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA). The structural and thermal properties of PVA/poly(IA-co-AMPS) were studied using Fourier transform infra… Show more

“…Therefore, a composite water-absorbent material prepared from it exhibits good water absorption and is significant for environmental protection. AMPS is a solid anionic watersoluble monomer containing strong hydrophilic groups with good salt resistance, acid-base resistance, and hydrolytic stability [17,24]. ATP is an aqueous magnesium-aluminum-rich layered chain silicate mineral with a particular fibrous crystal structure and a large surface area, having a theoretical chemical formula of Mg 5 Si 8 O 20 (HO) 2 (OH 2 ) 4 •4H 2 O [25,26].…”
