Abstract:This chapter presents an introduction to understanding the origins of emissions of unburned hydrocarbons and carbon monoxide from internal combustion engines, followed by a short review of the methods of modeling the formation of those pollutants. These methods range from simple thermodynamics models involving chemical equilibria through chemical kinetics of reactions to detailed chemistry of reactions, particularly for hydrocarbons. In the latter case, simplified reaction schemes are particularly important. E… Show more

scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
