UN Decade for Women

Abstract

Regarded as a significant institutional forum for the international women's movement to meet and further develop their agendas, the United Nations Decade for Women (the Decade) took place from 1975–1985 and began with the International Women's Year (1975). A succession of world conferences followed: the World Conference of the International Women's Year in Mexico City (1975), the World Conference of the United Nations Decade for Women: Equality, Development and Peace in Copenhagen (1980) and the World Conference to Review and Appraise the Achievements of the United Decade for Women: Equality, Development and Peace in Nairobi (1985). The Conferences centrally placed women's issues in the international arena and provided a forum for women's voices and opportunities for women to share their oppression, network, and strategize globally.
