“…significantly improved the coagulase activity, oxy-hemocyanin level, proPO activity, LYZ activity, and survivability of shrimp after WSSV infection (Velmurugan et al, 2015). In addition, Liu et al (2020) declared that dietary ulvan from Enteromorpha sp.…”

“…Furthermore, the regulatory consequences of different types and amounts of cytokine secretion by macrophages have been noticed in Paralichthys olivaceus and O. niloticus after administrating ulvan (from Codium fragile ) and carrageenan (from Hypnea musciformis ), respectively (Villamil et al, 2019; Yang et al, 2019). Therefore, the increased immune responses stimulated by marine macroalgae‐derived sulphated polysaccharides can directly improve the resistance of aquatic animals against infectious pathogens (Gora et al, 2018; Meenakshi et al, 2019; Ponce et al, 2020; Sivagnanavelmurugan et al, 2012; Traifalgar et al, 2012; Velmurugan et al, 2015; Villamil et al, 2019). For example, the previous study revealed that the survivability of fish and shrimp had been increased against Edwardsiella tarda (Villamil et al, 2019), Staphylococcus aureus , Enterococcus faecalis and Aspergillus niger (Meenakshi et al, 2019), Vibrio parahaemolyticus and V. harveyi (Sivagnanavelmurugan et al, 2014), white spot syndrome virus (WSSV) (Sivagnanavelmurugan et al, 2012), and some other pathogens after the administration of sulphated polysaccharides (Tables 1–3).…”

“…This serious problem has been the focus of several recent investigations on medicinal plants with antiviral activity against WSSV, leading to 51 publications in CAB database. This review lists 12 plant species with activity against WSSV in Table 1S, Supporting Information, that were investigated in a study of 2007 [63] and described in 9 publications from 2014 to 2019 [64][65][66][67][68][69][70][71][72].…”

“…Thus, most of the non-polar, lipophilic and semi-polar compounds, such as alkanes, lipids, fatty acids, pigments, chlorophylls, waxes, sterols, triterpenoids, alkaloids, steroidal alkaloids, and essential oils, were extracted with the first two solvents . The aim was to produce methanolic extracts compatible with the bioassay conditions that are expected to contain the more polar compounds such as saponins, alkaloids, sterols, tannins, glycosides, phenolics, flavonoids, flavones, polyphenols, terpenoids, anthocyanins, coumarins and carboxylic glycosides Njume et al, 2009;Velmurugan et al, 2015). Many of these compounds were found to be involved in cellular defense mechanisms.…”
