Screening, Brief Intervention, and Referral to Treatment in the Adolescent Trauma Population

Abstract: Adolescence is a critical stage in human development in which individuals gain independence from parents. This vulnerable period of life often involves experimentation with intoxicating substances and other risky behaviors. This combination of factors may lead to traumatic injury that requires emergency department treatment and hospitalization. This scenario presents an opportunity for screening, education and treatment regarding substance abuse. Policies that support such measures have been shown to be poorly… Show more

“…Barriers exist that can influence the successful implementation of SBIRT with adolescent trauma patients (Noffsinger & Cooley, 2012). Prior work demonstrates that institutional policy regarding screening adolescent trauma patients can improve screening rates (Mello et al, 2013); the current results suggest that a policy requiring comprehensive screening via laboratory testing and validated screening tools may be necessary to improve the quality of universal screening.…”

“…In addition, they recommend educating parents on how to identify at-risk behavior. The ED presents the opportunity for screening and education by initiating a “teachable moment.” This creates a perfect window for intervention regarding alcohol abuse, yet, policies that support such measures have been “poorly followed or not implemented.” 19–22 This is why more research, implementation of alcohol SBI, enforcement, and education is needed for adolescents…”

“…[5][6][7] Little research exists on the prevalence and any role alcohol may have in the pediatric trauma population. 2,8 In cases of pediatric maxillofacial injuries, studies recognizing alcohol involvement are few, 9,10 and in relation to the etiology and epidemiology of pediatric facial trauma, the presence and possible role of alcohol remains largely unknown.…”

“…Adolescence is a period of development associated with independence from parents and participation in risk behavior including alcohol experimentation. The additional influence of young adult role models can further promote childhood exposure to alcohol misuse and these combinations of factors may predispose young people to traumatic injuries requiring hospitalization 2…”
