Screening for Auditory Dysfunction in Infants by Evoked Oto-Acoustic Emissions

Abstract: \s=b\Auditory threshold using auditory brain-stem responses (ABR) was determined in 30 ears from normally-hearing infants and 16 ears from infants with sensorineural deafness. In the same population, evoked oto-acoustic emissions (EOAEs) in response to a click of 20-dB hearing level were recorded. The presence of EOAEs was correlated with ABR thresholds. Evoked oto-acoustic emis-

“…Although OAEs do not measure hearing per se, as hearing is perceptual, they do correlate well with hearing. Otoacoustic emissions and tympanometry have been validated, recommended and used routinely in the auditory assessment of infants, young children and children with disabilities [33][34][35]. These physiological measures require limited cooperation and participation by children with disabilities and/or children too shy or young to be conditioned to respond to play or conventional audiometry.…”

“…Qualquer alteração na transmissão do estímulo acústico poderá acarretar diminuição ou ausência de respostas, comprometendo a análise do exame. Bonfils et al (1988) 5 afirmaram que as EOAs não quantificam a deficiência auditiva, porém detectam a sua ocorrência, uma vez que estão presentes sempre que há integridade coclear, e não são observadas se os limiares auditivos estiverem acima de 30 dBNA.…”

“…Although in most hearing screening programs newborns are assessed by TEOAEs during the third or fourth 24-hour period after birth [1][2][3][4][5][6], TEOAEs have also been used in programs with limited hospitalization, due to social or financial reasons, in the first 24 h [7] or in the first 48 h [8][9][10].…”
