Screening for psychological distress using the Patient Health Questionnaire Anxiety and Depression Scale (PHQ-ADS): Initial validation of structural validity in dialysis patients

Abstract: The PHQ-ADS appears to have good structural validity in haemodialysis patients and is sufficiently unidimensional to warrant the use of a total distress score. A full psychometric analysis of the PHQ-ADS in a larger sample of dialysis patients is warranted.

“…As such, our findings are in line with recent findings concluding that somatic symptoms should be included in the assessment of depressive symptoms among chronic ill patients . Our findings also support previous research showing the unidimensionality of the PHQ‐9 and therefore warrant using a total score. Previous studies investigating distinct depressive symptoms have mostly dichotomized depression, and so our study adds to previous research by showing that somatic symptoms sleep problems and fatigue mainly discriminate for mild depression, whereas somatic symptoms appetite changes and concentration difficulty discriminate evenly across depression severity.…”

“…It includes 14 items for anxiety and depression with four alternative answers, which are used to measure total distress score. Self‐report scales including Beck's Depression Inventory (Olaya‐Contreras, ) and Patient Health Questionnaire–Anxiety and Depression Scale (PHQ‐ADS) (Chilcot et al, ) have also been shown to have some relevance with distress for particular patient groups.…”

“…illness 132 specific measures of distress are emerging with psychometrically defined cut-offs to identify 133 individuals who would benefit from clinical intervention (Ma et al, 2014;Polonsky et al, 134 2005; Snoek et al, 2015). In LTC contexts where illness specific measures of distress are 135 lacking the use of composite scores of depression and anxiety with a priori defined cut-offs 136 may offer a useful substitute (Chilcot et al, 2018;Kroenke et al, 2016). 137 From here on in, the term primary mental health disorder will be referred to as a condition 138 that pre-dated the onset of a LTC or appear unrelated to the LTC (i.e.…”
