Screening for Retinopathy of Prematurity Through Utilization a Pediatric Retinal Camera at Jim Pattison Children’s Hospital: A Vision for Improved Care

Abstract: Retinopathy of Prematurity (ROP) is a vascular proliferative disorder of preterm infants, with increased disease severity and incidence occurring with lower gestational age and birth weight. An alternate approach to ROP screening with wide-field digital retinal imaging helps with the early detection of ROP, especially during the pandemic.

“…[32][33][34] Typical ROP screening needs an experienced ophthalmologist to perform dilated eye examinations through a binocular indirect ophthalmoscope (BIO), which is the standard method. 35 Despite the growing number of preterm infants who require ROP screening, only a limited number of trained ophthalmologists is present, resulting in an enormous workload and delayed surveillance. 14 For instance, the United States has only 1504 ophthalmologists, and only 11% of them can perform ROP screenings, while Canada has only 100 subspecialists responsible for more than 12,150 ROP examinations each year.…”

After the successful experience with tele-screening programs in LMIC, such as the KIDROP model in India, the recent United Nations Development Program (UNDP) report strongly suggested DRP as a new gold standard tool for ROP screening.…”
