Screening of depression in cardiology: A study on 617 cardiovascular patients

Abstract: BackgroundDepression screening in the cardiovascular disease (CVD) care setting is under-performed, also because the issue of the optimal screening tools cut-off is still open. We analysed which HADS (Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale) total score cut-off value shows the best properties in two groups of 357 Acute Coronary Syndrome (ACS) and 260 Chronic Coronary Artery Disease (CAD) hospitalized patients. MethodsA Receiver Operating Characteristics (ROC) curve was plotted for both groups using the Montgomer… Show more

“…These psychiatric disorders are present in large portion of the population after the occurrence of acute coronary syndrome (ACS), which covers the acute myocardial infarction with STsegment elevation (STEMI), non-ST segment elevation (NSTE), and unstable angina (UA). Anxiety affects between 20 and 50% of this population, while depressive symptoms are present between 15 and 45% of the population (3)(4) .…”

“…In this analysis, non‐substance abuse mental illness in aggregate was demonstrated to be associated with worse outcomes for patients with stable angina. As screening for depression remains underutilized, there is likely even less implementation of screening for other mental health conditions in these vulnerable patients. Furthermore, to our knowledge, there have been no randomized trials of interventions in PCI patients with non‐depression psychiatric conditions.…”

“…Major depressive disease (MDD) is a frequently recurring or chronic psychiatric disease with high prevalence 1,2 and is characterized by alterations in affect and mood. Of utmost importance is the association of MDD with high rates of suicidality and mortality 3,4,5,6 . Pharmacological treatment strategies include monoamine neurotransmitter reuptake inhibition [e.g., treatment with selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) and serotonin-norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors (SNRIs)], lithium augmentation, or atypical antipsychotic augmentation strategies 7,8 .…”
