Screening of patients with bronchopulmonary diseases using methods of infrared laser photoacoustic spectroscopy and principal component analysis

Abstract: A human exhaled air analysis by means of infrared (IR) laser photoacoustic spectroscopy is presented. Eleven healthy nonsmoking volunteers (control group) and seven patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD, target group) were involved in the study. The principal component analysis method was used to select the most informative ranges of the absorption spectra of patients' exhaled air in terms of the separation of the studied groups. It is shown that the data of the profiles of exhaled air abso… Show more

“…This even makes the "narrow peak" approach promising for line spectrum studies, where PC analysis shows good results, for example for infrared absorption lines of gaseous complex molecules. 15 Even in the nonlinear cases, such as reabsorption, the suggested analysis procedure allows the spectra of fluorophores to be estimated (case V). Comparing the spectra of reconstructed peaks with typical reabsorption curves, one could select which case, IV or V, takes place.…”

“…Moreover, Kistenev et al used laser photoacoustic spectroscopy to measure the concentration VOCs in the exhaled breath. 51 They considered seven patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and 11 healthy nonsmokers (control group). This technique obtained the most informative range of the patient's exhaled air absorption spectra.…”

“…Moreover, nitrogen-containing compounds are at elevated levels in human breath for liver impairment or uremia. Nitric oxide has been identified as a biomarker of airway inflammation such as in asthma, allergic rhinitis, eosinophilic bronchitis, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) [21][22][23][24]. Carbon monoxide is indicative of an increase in oxidative stress or stimulation by pro-inflammatory cytokines, such as during smoking cessation [25,26].…”
