Robert Thornton was the scribe of two important compilations of Middle English literature (London, British Library, MS Additional 31042 and Lincoln, Cathedral Library,
MS
91). Thanks to his efforts at producing these manuscripts, we have the only surviving copies of numerous literary texts from medieval England, including, most importantly,
Wynnere and Wastoure, The Sege of Melayn
, and the alliterative
Morte Arthure
. Thornton is also valuable to contemporary scholarship because he provides us with an example of a flesh‐and‐blood lay reader of the English Middle Ages, giving us insight into the literary and religious interests of such people.
