Scrotal infrared digital thermography as a predictor of seasonal effects on sperm traits in Braford bulls

Abstract: The aim of this study was to assess the seasonal effects of the environment on semen quality in bulls, using infrared thermography. Sperm motility (M), mass motion (MM), and vigor (VIG) were evaluated in sperm samples from 17 Bradford bulls aged approximately 24 months at the beginning of the study. Infrared thermography images and data were collected using an infrared FLIR T 300 camera and Quick Report 1.2 SP2 software to determine the temperature of the proximal and distal poles of the testis and to assess t… Show more

“…The scrotal surface temperature can be measured by infrared thermography, which is a fast, accurate and noninvasive method, used in andrological evaluations and to understand the scrotal/testicular thermoregulation of bulls (Kastelic, ; Menegassi et al., ). The scrotal surface temperature is reduced from the vascular cone, originating the testicular temperature gradient, which indicates the difference between the temperature of the proximal and distal poles of the testis (Coulter, Senger, & Bailey, ; Kastelic, Coulter, & Cook, ).…”

“…In summary, electrical stimuli were applied in a continuous rhythm and collection of semen samples began when the preejaculatory fluids trickling from the glans penis become opaque and was concluded when the fluids again turned clear (Althouse, 2007;Menegassi et al, 2015).…”
