SCTP: state of the art in research, products, and technical challenges

Abstract: Abstract-The Stream Control Transmission Protocol (SCTP)is being standardized by IETF as a reliable transport protocol to address a number of limitations of TCP. Due to its attractive features such as multi-streaming and multi-homing, SCTP has received much attention from the research community and industry. This paper serves as a tutorial by introducing the main features of SCTP, and discussing the state of the art in SCTP research activities. We also provide a survey on the available products which implement… Show more

“…Multi-streaming elude the Head-of-line blocking (HOL) exists in TCP (Transmission Control Protocol), where a single stream loss can cause subsequent streams to also be delayed. HOL effect does not affect the SCTP association due to individual streams [11]. Figure 3 describes a multi-streamed association between hosts A and B.…”

“…Multi-homed nodes can be simultaneously connected through multiple end-to-end paths to increase resilience to path failure. For instance, users might be simultaneously connected through dial-up/broadband or via multiple wireless technologies such as 802.11b and GPRS [11]. shows that in case of a failure on the path to one of the IP addresses, the SCTP sender may use another of the receiver's addresses.…”

“…As part of this effort, IETF standardized the Stream Control Transmission Protocol (SCTP) in 2001. SCTP [1][2][3][4] added features like multistreaming, multihoming and a cookie-based mechanism with 4-way handshake to mitigate various denial of service attacks [5].…”

“…To support the ongoing VHO research into UMTS/WLAN networks, the stream control transmission protocol (SCTP) was previously proposed to minimize transition time during VHO over HWNs [2,5]. In particular, SCTP has a highly reliable transport layer protocol which is placed at the side of the user datagram protocol (UDP) and transmission control protocol (TCP) [11,12,16,18]. It provides ordered delivery and stability of data between two endpoints similar to UDP and TCP.…”

“…Note that two MNs in SCTP can have only one main link, but more than one secondary link. This kind of data session is explained in SCTP [4,11,12,18,19].…”
